This week on the #TOBcommunity spotlight, we’d like you to meet Janet Oganah (she/her), a former barrister and founder of Janet’s List - a curated platform for independent UK brands by Black women and women of colour.

How do you / your organisation support and celebrate marginalised people? 

I am a former barrister and the founder of Janet's List.

Janet’s List is a curated platform that helps people discover and buy from independent brands by Black women and women of colour from the U.K. We do this through our innovative and unique pop up concept stores, our curated website as well as retail partnerships. In 2020, I curated the first-ever virtual marketplace for the 24-hour WOW Global Festival. Janet's List also collaborated with Somerset House and Coco de Mer in London.

What can we expect from you in the coming months?

We recently launched a YouTube channel where we'll cover topics including female Black-owned brands, business strategy, book reviews and productivity. The vibe is very much 'aspiring rich millennial auntie!': https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ1CVehghhGpzPxYNrCd7xQ

Janet’s List sells a curated list of products and items from independent brands across the lifestyle category. Unsurprisingly, the pandemic has had a huge negative impact on our ability to bring our unique pop up stores to physical retail spaces. We hope 2021 will be more promising on that front. In the meantime, we really appreciate those that continue to support us on our website.

What’s your secret superpower?

Years of being a family law barrister was an education in 'people' - I can sense non-verbal cues and pick up signals that tend to get lost under the surface!

Favourite quote that sums up your philosophy on life: 

'Whatever you dream or do, you can achieve it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it' - Goethe.

I read this quote aged around 17 or 18 and it still holds true at more than double that age!
