This week’s #TOBcommunity spotlight is on Isabella Silvers (She/Her), an editor at Hearst, and owner of ‘Mixed Messages’ a weekly newsletter on mixed-race identities. No matter her outlet, Isabella makes sure inclusion is at the heart of all that she does. 

What organisation(s) do you run or work for?

I'm an Editor at Hearst working for the likes of Cosmo, ELLE and Digital Spy, and Chair our Hearst Heritage network. I also write a weekly newsletter on mixed identity called ‘Mixed Messages’.

How do you / your organisation support and celebrate marginalised people? 

Inclusion is at the heart of everything I do. Whether I'm writing about relationships, fitness, TV or fashion, I try to showcase a representative range of talent and work with a diverse crew behind the scenes, too.

At Hearst, we have a number of networks that offer community, support and education for both members and allies, from Jew(ish) to Pride and our Parents Network. The first of these networks was Hearst Heritage, which I Chair. We also have a Diversity & Belonging strategy in place, with a Steering Group to guide it, for which I am Deputy Chair.

What can we expect from you in the coming months?

In September, Mixed Messages will turn one. From an idea in my brain to thousands of readers and a year of interviews, I can't wait to take Mixed Messages further, bigger and better – maybe even to the printed page... I'll also be publishing a series of articles from LGBTQ+ writers on the TV series and films that have resonated with them, as well as more incredible projects that are TBC.

What’s your secret superpower?

I am the UK's reigning Saved By The Bell quiz champion (as far as I know). I am also very good at championing others to take chances and make their career goals a reality.

“Don't ask, don't get” and “Ask forgiveness, not permission”.
