This week’s #TOBcommunity spotlight is on Chloe O. Davis (She/Her) this week, author of The Queens’ English, The LGBTQIA+ Dictionary of Lingo and Colloquial Phrases.
What organisation(s) do you run or work for?
The Queens’ English
How do you / your organisation support and celebrate marginalised people?
I am a proud Black bisexual woman and the author of The Queens’ English, The LGBTQIA+ Dictionary of Lingo and Colloquial Phrases. This book is one of a kind! It is a landmark reference guide to the LGBTQIA+ community's contribution to the English language--this is an intersectional, inclusive, playfully illustrated dictionary featuring more than 800 terms and fabulous phrases created by and for queer culture.
I am extremely proud of this work and I believe The Queens’ English is a starting point for important conversations around inclusivity, sexuality, gender expression, and identity. With this book, I strive to uplift marginalized communities and identities, and to help bring visibility and understanding to queerness, gayness, Blackness, and transness; to celebrate our uniqueness and to authentically celebrate all of humanity.
What can we expect from you in the coming months?
I think it is important to empower our queer youth and am currently working on The Queens’ English for LGBTQIA+ Youth! Also, I am excited for the return of Broadway and will perform in the new production of Paradise Square, and I am the Associate Choreographer of the Broadway revival For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow is Enuf.
What’s your secret superpower?
I believe my superpower is my creativity and my love for storytelling. Whether it’s seen through my writing, dancing, or acting, I desire to uncover incredible stories and bring them to life.
Favourite quote that sums up your philosophy on life:
Everything you want, need, and desire is on the other side of fear. Go confront your fears and Go be great!
