THE OTHER BOX MAKES FIRST OFFICIAL SENIOR HIRE

Award-Winning Platform Hires Sima Kumar as Head of Fashion.

4th March 2019 London, UK: The Other Box, an award-winning platform championing creatives from under-represented backgrounds, makes its first strategic hire, signalling growth of “creative industries” sector to include the fashion industry. Co-founders Leyya Sattar and Roshni Goyate have hired Sima Kumar as Head of Fashion. In the newly created role, Kumar will be responsible for building on the company’s ground-breaking work to make the creative industries more inclusive by leading all fashion collaborations and partnerships.

Leyya Sattar comments: ‘As an increasing number of fashion brands approach us to consult and collaborate on better representation industry-wide, we recognise the need to bring on someone with a breadth of fashion expertise, balancing business acumen with inspiring creative leadership. Sima brings that experience in abundance having worked with retail companies, as a fashion stylist with agency experience for over 20 years and as a creative director.’

Sima has been advising The Other Box since 2017.

Both Sattar and Goyate note it is Sima’s experience with fashion technology that was the deal-maker. Goyate says, ‘Whereas there are hundreds of experienced fashion professionals in London, Sima comes with a distilled understanding of emerging technologies and a global experience which aligns with our growth strategy. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the team.’

Sima adds: ‘I’ve always enjoyed a great deal of fluidity in the evolution of my career. This role is indicative of a relationship that has grown organically and with mutual respect at its core. When I first started out as a stylist, I never saw anyone who looked like me or had a name like mine on any call sheet. To be able to join a trailblazing organisation at this exciting stage of growth and be able to foster new talent, educate fashion start-ups and established brands on how to create space for other and the value of other is deeply personal for me.’

Born in Fiji, Kumar is a Canadian who now calls London home. She comes with 20+years’ global experience of working in Fashion, Film, Commercial, Editorial and Celebrity in branding and creative direction. Her ability to work autonomously from any time zone while also being adept at building rapport with stakeholders at all levels was a key factor in this strategic hire.

The Other Box was founded in September 2016 by Sattar and Goyate to address the lack of diversity, inclusion and representation within the creative industries. They have since developed a flagship diversity and inclusion training programme called Know Your Bias, which they have rolled out for several companies, and includes elements of unconscious bias training and storytelling. They have also grown a community of 2500+ creatives who identify as having been ‘othered’ or ignored by mainstream representation, and worked with global brands on creative partnerships to enable opportunities for community members to work in creative settings.

The Other Box has recently been accoladed as #Forbes100 Founders in Europe, Financial Times and Inclusive Boards: The UK’s top 100 black and minority ethnic leaders in tech, Ad Age ‘Women to watch Europe 2018’ and Campaign Magazine and AMV: Top 50 Trailblazers in the industry. They were also finalists for the WOW Women in Creative Industries award for Breaking New Ground.
